Webinar: What is Hate? And How Do We Counter It?

In this powerful webinar, leading experts explore the urgent issue of hate: how to identify it, how it spreads, and what we can do to counter it. From schoolyards to social media, hate manifests in ways that impact all communities. This session examines the roots of hate through legal, psychological, and social justice lenses, and shares hope-filled responses emerging from education, activism, tech, and grassroots action.

Dr. Karen Mock, ESJE Acting Chair and longtime human rights educator, opens with a grounding in the psychology of hate and the systemic responses required to stop its spread. The conversation is moderated by Saleha Khan, a leader in diversity and inclusion training, who brings decades of experience countering hate crimes and hate propaganda.

Featured speakers include:

Heather Thomas-Flores, Director of Operations and Chief of Staff at Life After Hate, who shares insight into how hate speech and propaganda fuel radicalization and how we can use empathy, digital outreach, and community building as powerful tools for prevention.

Elizabeth Moore, educator, writer, and former extremist, offers an inspiring look at innovative ways communities are resisting hate, including examples from gaming, sports, alternative media, and mutual aid.

Together, they examine the emotional toll of hate, warning signs of radicalization, and how we can all become protectors, preventers, and partners in building more just and inclusive communities.
